During a regular meeting of top salons here in Vancouver, BC, Canada, on Feb. 13, a guest speaker from The Difference Engine made a very salient point that pertain to salon and spas: Expecting new behaviour in an old environment is impossible.
Anurag Gupta was referring to the ways in which we expect to change the way we do business simply because we want to or have the desire to. While this "intent" is really important to success, your surroundings will threaten your ability to change.
For example, to ask your colourists to help sell more colour maintenance products is one thing. You can even add a bonus for their sales or offer a prize to the top retailer. But, you need to change you environment to really make things work and change your business.
In this case, you may need to add shelving in your colour area to showcase product or add posters showing the benefits of these products where clients wait for processing.
When you want to make a change to your business, consider the environment in which you are intending to change. Add the question to your process: "In what ways will we change our environment to be successful with the new behavoiur?"
